Isn’t the moral you draw here the opposite from that of the gemara you quote?  Isn’t the moral that davka at a time like this we cannot give up our quest for truth and yashrut in favor of mere unity for the sake of political power?  Wouldn’t such compromise and false unity be, in fact, the final dissolution of anything like a brit that makes us special, that gives us a reason for being separate from other nations?  And if we lose that reason, what is the point of our political power?
