"The Right Way to Accept the Torah" - Comments

1 micha on 2010 05 18

This would also explain the connection between Purim and acceptance of the Torah, which Chazal draw out from “qiymu veqiblu haYehudim {the Jews fulfilled and accepted}—they fulfilled what they had already accepted.”

With the shift from revealed to hidden miracles, the mountain was no longer over our heads. There was no more of miraculous reward and punishment making accepting the Torah self-evident. (Although, as we see from the nevi’im, even that faded quickly after each miracle.) For the first time, mitzvos could be accepted and performed without that feeling of compulsion.
